Refugee Week is an annual event used to enlighten Australian residents about refugees, their struggles, and life adjusting in Australia, and to celebrate their contributions within Australian society. Their goal is to “create a culture of welcome” throughout the country using positive imagery of refugees promoted through the poster competition.
I originally wanted to strive for a light and hopeful poster and found as the work developed that it showed a deeper message of desperation and seeking. This could also be due to the darker colours I chose, the layering of the papers, coloured to display land and sea, bringing the sides closer together, and the white space in between demonstrating the distance and fear which truly divides us.
